Part 11: The Mystery Solved

A couple days later Shimmy and Levi came running into the house.

“Ima,” yelled Shimmy, “you won’t believe it.  We solved the mystery.  We know who has been giving the neighbors the gifts.  It’s Shmuel – Shmuel the Shuffler.”

“Really,” exclaimed ima, “I don’t believe it!”

“It’s true,” said Shimmy, still struggling to catch his breath.  “We were hiding behind a tree on our street to see if we would see the person.  All of a sudden we saw Shmuel walk up to the Goldstein’s house, leave a big box of vegetables and walk away.  When the Goldstein’s saw the vegetables they were so happy, but Shmuel was nowhere to be found.”

“Did you tell the Goldstein’s who left the vegetables,” asked ima.

“I really wanted to,” answered Shimmy, “but then I thought that if Shmuel wants his kindness to be a secret I’ll let it stay that way.  It’s just nice to know that we solved the mystery.  And you know, Levi and I learned a lot about doing deeds of kindness from Shmuel.”  Levi nodded in agreement.

Aba sat in the other room listening to his sons.  He was very happy with everything they had learned from Shmuel.

“I guess my sons aren’t the only detectives in the family,” aba chuckled to him self.   “Shmuel sure turned out to be more than we all expected!”

The End.

Part 10: The Real Shmuel

Aba found the mother’s house and knocked on the door.  A child answered and aba gave him the warm food to bring to his mother.

The windy road which aba took to drive home led by Shmuel’s house.  Aba noticed the light was still on and, as he looked closer, he could see Shmuel swaying back and forth, deeply engrossed in prayer.  Aba pulled the car over and watched.  Tears were streaming down Shmuel’s face as he poured out his heart in prayer.  From time to time, aba could hear the beautiful melodies of Shmuel’s prayers filling the night air.

Aba couldn’t contain himself any longer and as soon as Shmuel finished praying he knocked on the door.  After some time Shmuel answered the door.  He was in his pajamas and looked as if he had been asleep.

“Shmuel,” said aba, “I know your secret.  I know you are not the simpleton you would like everyone to believe you are.”

Shmuel listened to Aba.  “I’m not sure I understand what you mean.”

“Shmuel, I’ve seen you learning and davening.  I also want to learn Torah and daven with such feeling.  Please, please, teach me.”

Shmuel stared back at aba for a long time.  “I will teach you,” said Shmuel thoughtfully, “Please come to my home tomorrow night and we will begin.”

Aba left overjoyed.  He had finally found what he had been searching for.

Part 9: Aba Sees a New Side of Shmuel

“I’m trying to find the house of the
mother who is sick. I want to bring her
and her children some warm food,” said
aba to Shmuel. “I thought you might
know where they live.”
“They live just down the road and to the
left,” answered Shmuel. “I am sure they
will be very grateful for the warm meal. I
know they are having quite a difficult
time.”
As aba thanked Shmuel and turned to
leave he stopped. “Shmuel, can I ask you
a question?”
“Sure, Avraham,,” said Shmuel, “what’s
on your mind?”
“When I drove up, I could see you were
deeply engrossed in a book. What were
you learning?”
“Actually, I just took a book down from
the shelf to read for a bit,” said Shmuel.
“In fact I was about to get ready to go to
sleep. It’s been a long day. If you could
please tell the mother that I will stop by
tomorrow to chop some wood for her fire I
would appreciate it.”
“No problem,” said aba. “Have a good
night.”
As aba turned to leave he thought to
himself, “there’s really much more to
Shmuel than meets the eye. I need to find
out more. Perhaps he will be able to help
me…”
